Obituary for Lois Read

Lois Read, 96, of Normal, passed away at 6:30 a.m., Monday, September 9, 2019 at McLean County Nursing Home, Normal.

A private family graveside service will be held at Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington.

Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Second Presbyterian Church or Bloomington High School Athletics.

Lois was born November 16, 1922 in Chicago, the daughter of Campbell and Louisa Gleichman Marvin. She married Richard Johnson “Dick” Read on March 10, 1945 in Chicago. He died on April 6, 2013.

Survivors include four children, Barbara (Bruder) Read-Stapleton of Seattle, WA, Bill (Donna) Read of Normal, Patti (Bob) Smith of Normal and Peter Johnson Read of Bloomington; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Lois graduated from Hirsch High School in Chicago. She attended Illinois Wesleyan University where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and served the alumni association with leadership and dedication. Lois worked in the book department at W.B. Read and Co and volunteered at Brokaw Hospital for many years. Most importantly she hosted family dinners, always baking her famous cookies, cakes and pies.

Lois was always active and swam at Angler’s, Lakeside and the YMCA as well as playing tennis, golf, bridge and skiing in Colorado.

The family would like to thank all of the staff at McLean County Nursing Home for their wonderful care and support during Lois’s time there.
