Obituary for Mary Elizabeth "Marybeth" Phillips

Mary Elizabeth (“Marybeth”) Phillips was born on January 5th, 1940 in Washington, D.C. She passed away after a courageous battle with illness on December 2nd, 2018 under the care of her family in Bloomington, Illinois. She is survived by her husband of fifty-seven years, Dr. Alan G. Phillips, Sr. of Bloomington, Illinois, and by her daughter Mrs. Francess Harris, the wife of Mr. Timothy Harris and mother of Marybeth’s grandsons Seth and Noah Harris of Bloomington, Illinois. Marybeth is also survived by her son Dr. Alan G. Phillips, Jr. and his wife, Mrs. Ronna L. Phillips of Bloomington, Illinois. In addition, she is survived by her youngest son Dr. Richard L. Phillips and his wife Mrs. Karrah Phillips, along with their four children (Marybeth’s grandsons Kamden and Kaeson Phillips and her granddaughters Kyleigh and Koralyn Phillips) from Christiansburg, Virginia. Her loss is also felt deeply by her brother, Mr. William (“Bill”) Richardson and his wife Polly, along with their children, Jody, Patrick and Mark in Florida.

Marybeth will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and friend to all those who knew her. For twenty-seven years, she served faithfully as Administrative Assistant in the Business Office of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois. Her dedicated service in that role was honored on April 9, 2014 prior to her retirement. Before her work at IWU in 1987, she served as Administrative Assistant to the Associate Graduate Dean at Northwestern University. Prior to her work with higher education, Marybeth supported her husband and family as a dedicated homemaker and pastor’s wife at many different churches in Missouri, Arkansas, California and Illinois over the course of eleven years. She also worked at her alma mater, Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri (B.A. in Religious Education, 1967) from 1975-1980 in order to support her family.

Marybeth was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Normal, Illinois and will be remembered as a fine Christian who embodied loving encouragement and support to all her family, friends and acquaintances. She loved sharing holiday celebrations with her kids and grandkids and always found time to enjoy God’s wonderful creation, watching beautiful humming birds from her living room, sharing sunsets on the porch with her husband, camping at Yosemite National Park or laughing in wonder at her mischievous Pekinese dogs. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. We love you, mom and look forward to seeing you again in heaven…someday.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church, Normal, with Rev. Larry Gaylord officiating. Burial will be private. The family has requested memorial contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church, Normal.
