Barnie L Smith Obituary (2013 - 2013)

Barnie L. Smith, 87, of Bloomington, passed away at 3:23 pm, Sunday, July 21, 2013 at his daughter"s home in Bloomington. His memorial service will be at 4:00 pm, Thursday, (7-25-13) at the College Avenue Baptist Church in Normal with Rev. Clark Killingsworth officiating. Military rites will be accorded by Bloomington-Normal American Legion Honor Guard at the church following the service. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 pm, Thursday at the church. rnrnIn lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the College Avenue Baptist Church, Normal.Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington is in charge of arrangements. rnrnBarnie was born on May 29, 1926 in Myrtle, Mississippi, the son of Barney B. and Katie M. Childs Smith. He married Mae Lind on August 28, 1948 in Washington, DC. She preceded him in death on July 23, 2006. rnrnHe is survived by three children, Peter L. (Karol) Smith, Fayetteville, GA, Timothy L. Smith, Sunnyvale, CA and Christina L. (David) Perhai, Bloomington; seven grandchildren, Jeni, Dustin, Alexis, Hannah, Joshua, Mary and Abigail; five great grandchildren; one brother, Josephy (Gilda) Smith, Fordland, MO and one sister, Bertha (Paul) Holt, Sweetwater, TN. rnrnHe was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Pete Smith. rnrnBarnie graduated from Cass Technical High School in 1945 and one of his teachers there was Charles Lindbergh"s mother. He received his B.A. from Baylor University in 1952. Barnie served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII as an airplane mechanic. He was employed as an officer for the Internal Revenue Service for over 25 years.Barnie was very active in every church that he was ever a member of.
