Charles V. "Chuck" Mattoon Obituary (1925 - 2018)

Charles Van Chuck Mattoon, 92, of Normal, passed away at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at McLean County Nursing Home, Normal. His funeral will be at noon Monday, January 8, 2018 at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, January 8, 2018 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ministry and More or to Easter Seals.He was born December 12, 1925 in Clinton, a son of Charles E. and Fern VanAntwerp Mattoon. He married Dorothy Joanne Roderick on August 16, 1947 in Bloomington. Surviving are his wife; four children, Randy (Linda) Mattoon of Normal, Cyndi (Glen) Leach of Pikeville, TN, Rod (Linda) Mattoon of Springfield and Mindy Buterbaugh of Normal; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 3 great great-grandchildren and one brother, Gene Mattoon of Paxton.He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Mattoon; a sister, Susan Aranseau; and a grandson, Trent Mattoon. Chuck graduated from University High School and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944, serving in the South Pacific during WWII. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Following his military service, Chuck was employed by the Pantagraph and Illinois Graphics for the next 50 years. He was a member of the American Legion and Calvary Baptist Church. Chuck received numerous honors and awards for serving as a leader and mentor with the Boy Scouts of America. He was very active in the Easter Seals camp for many years. Chuck enjoyed camping and fishing.
