David G. Penn Obituary (1950 - 2014)

David G. Penn, 64, of Bloomington, passed away at 1:20 p.m., Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal after a long illness, surrounded by his family.His celebration of life visitation will be from Noon to 4:00 p.m., Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home in Bloomington. Interment will be private.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation ArmyrnrnDavid was born on July 29, 1950 in Bloomington, the son of Paul S. and June Marble Penn.He is survived by a son, Jeff (Cara) Penn of Bloomington; a daughter, Lacy (Zack) Fidler of Wheaton; two grandchildren, Blake and Kylie Fidler; his parents, Paul and June Penn, three siblings, Don (Norma) Penn, John (Mary) Penn and Linda (Mark) Drane, all of Bloomington; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by a niece, Polly Jo Jaspers.David was a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the US Army. He was a lifelong member of Laborers Local 362 in Bloomington, becoming a member at age 16. Ten years later he was elected secretary-treasurer of the local and eventually was elected business manager of the local. David held several other positions locally, statewide and regionally and was currently the Director of the Midwest Region Organizing Committee (MROC)rnrnDavid was always there to help others and was a very giving person. He was active in many community/civic organizations and served on countless boards over the years. He was very proud to serve on the State of Illinois Health Facility Planning Board and his affiliation with the Special Olympics, the Salvation Army and the Chamber of Commerce.David enjoyed many things in life including Notre Dame Football. But most of all, he was a family man and enjoyed being with his family. He loved teaching his children and their friends to fish as well as hunt for morel mushrooms. David was very proud to be a father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
