Gene E. Megli Obituary (1938 - 2014)

Gene E. Megli, 75, of Bloomington, unexpectedly died at 4:24 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2014 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington. Private family burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday, February 24, 2014 at the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Recycling for Families or to the American Heart Association.Gene was born May 31, 1938 in Mankato, Kansas, the son of Lyle and Etta (Van Wey) Megli. He married Shirley Bell on June 23, 1963 in Rossville, Illinois, and she survives in Bloomington.Also surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth B. (Brian Parkhouse) Megli and Julie M. Megli, both of Bloomington; an expected granddaughter, Isabella, due any moment; a brother, Roy Dale Megli of Rock Falls; and a host of family, in-laws and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved in-laws; a sister, Bonnie Mayberry; and a brother, Dwight Megli.Gene earned his B.S. in Agriculture from Illinois State University, his M.S. in Animal Science from the University of Illinois and served in the Army National Guard. In his early career, he taught at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and was an extension agent at the University of Kentucky. Gene also worked as a loan officer at the McLean County Bank and served as their farm manager. He later sold insurance for Farmland/Nationwide. Gene enjoyed the time he spent volunteering at Recycling for Families. He also loved animals and found great peace in spending time working in his yard, especially mowing.Gene was a devoted Christian husband and father and will be greatly missed.
