Mary Ellen Evers Obituary (1925 - 2016)

Mary Ellen Evers, 91, of Bloomington, passed away at 8:00 a.m. Thursday, (Nov 17, 2016) at her residence. She lived in LaSalle-Peru, Illinois for 42 years. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Holy Cross Cemetery in Normal. Visitors are welcome. Carmody-Flynn Memorial Home is in charge. Mary Ellen was born Mar. 22, 1925 in Bloomington to Anton and Nellie Reardon Evers. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Tish Evers of Aurora and a brother-in-law, Ward Freitag of Arizona. Mary Ellen is also survived by three nieces, Colleen Oehler (Darrel), Kaye Gwin (Gary) and Jane Kruger (Dave) and six nephews, Doug Freitag, John Freitag (Amy), Scott Freitag, Mike Evers, Mark Evers (Jeanne), and Tony Evers (Kathy) and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Francis Evers and Dr. Raymond Evers; and two sisters, Annamay Evers and Kathleen Freitag; sister-in-law Jean Evers; her parents and a special friend, John Dickman. Mary Ellen graduated from Bloomington High and then went on to graduate from Illinois State with her BS and University of Illinois with her MA. She began her career in 1947 teaching English at LaSalle-Peru Twp. High School. She enjoyed both the school and the community and learning about the various ethnic groups living in harmony with each other, yet holding on to their traditions. She remained at L-P High School for 42 years holding the positions of: Counselor, Director of Student Services, Dean of Girls and Women, Assistant Superintendent and Associate Superintendent. She was very proud of these accomplishments but she said her most rewarding years were those spent teaching English and working with the students. She served as a role model and mentor for countless girls and women who wanted to be teachers or administrators. Mary was a perfectionist in all she did. She made many wonderful lifelong friends during her service and retired in 1989. She was a member of St Patricks Catholic Church in Bloomington.
